Best Cordless Vacuum Cleaners – What is all the hype?

Why go cordless?

So, what is all the hype when it comes to cordless vacuum cleaners and why do we need to find the best cordless vacuum cleaner? Surely a corded vacuum cleaner is more powerful, cheaper and more dependable? I think if we went back 5 years that would certainly be the case and cordless vacuum cleaners were not only new to the market but also not really ready. These were the days when we had been used to DustBusters the small handheld vacuum cleaner that once charged for a ridiculously long period of time they could just about get rid of some of the crumbs on the floor.

Fast forward to present day and we are presented with cordless vacuum cleaners from established manufacturers such as Dyson and also from new players such as Shark and Gtech. The battery technology which is now Lithium ION has come a long way allowing models such as the Dyson V8 to provide all or nothing for 40 minutes. It doesn’t degrade in quality towards the end of the battery, it provides full power all the way to the battery is fully depleted.

Cordless vacuum cleaners also bring a level of convenience that allows you to clean every day, you simply pick up the vacuum cleaner get the job done and put it back away, quickly and simply. No fuss with wires, large vacuum cleaners to move about. Cleaning a car with a cordless vacuum cleaner is also simple, quick and easy allowing for more frequent cleaning. You are not limited to parking near to your house, running a long extension lead and legging up passers-by with cables.

Our Best Cordless Vacuum Cleaner Winner – Shark DuoClean IF200UK

Where do we start with the Shark DuoClean IF200K? We have reviewed two fine competitors in the category of the best cordless vacuum cleaner, the Dyson V8 and Gtech Air Ram. Both amazing cordless vacuum cleaners. But whilst they were amazing vacuum cleaners, they didn’t quite have what the Shark DuoClean has!

If I had to pick it’s two best features it would be its Flexology allowing for easy access to hard to reach places. As well as making storing so much simpler thanks to its ability to fold in half and support its own weight! My other best feature choice of the Shark DuoClean IF200UK is its removable battery, allowing for charging on or off the device. Coupled with the charging dock and additional battery it really is amazing.

See below for a more in-depth analysis of the Shark DuoClean IF200UK and why we feel it is worthy of our best in class award.

    • 22 Minutes run time
    • 3 Hours charge time
    • Removable battery
    • Flexology technology

We have found that cordless vacuum cleaners have several advantages, they are not being restricted by a wire, they are usually less bulky than their corded counterpart but without compromising on power. What we have found in the past and has to be said to a degree with the Dyson V8 and Gtech Air Ram is that they aren’t a complete vacuum cleaner. They are lacking somewhat in the feature set you get from a traditional upright cleaner. With the Shark DuoClean IF200UK we feel it delivers in every area a traditionally corded vacuum cleaner does, plus adds additional functionality to boot!

The Shark DuoClean IF200UK has won our best cordless vacuum cleaner due to the versatility, feature set and great price point. Some of it’s key features include;

  • Flexology – The ability to reach under hard to reach places, reach up high to clean curtain tracks and folds into half it’s size.
  • Optional 2nd battery and docking station, meaning that you never run out of charge whilst cleaning your house or car.
  • DuoClean – The shark makes use of two brushes to clean in 3 ways and switch between surfaces with ease.
  • Converts into a handheld cleaner with ease.

The flexology concept that Shark has used in their DuoClean IF200UK allows you to slide the vacuum under sofas, tables and cabinets, it really is something impressive to see! It also comes into its own when it comes to storage, a traditional upright corded vacuum cleaner, or even a cordless counterpart for that matter takes up a fair degree of space. Some manufacturers such as Dyson have created a wall like a docking station for them, this keeps them out of the way but not everyone wants a vacuum cleaner on display on the wall. The Shark IF200K allows you to store it in the smallest of spaces thanks to it folding itself in half. Once in half, it doesn’t need leaning on something to support its weight, the Shark DuoClean IF200UK stands freely and securely.

DuoClean is a technology pioneered by Shark to do two things, firstly it allows the Shark IF200UK to capture most dirt in its first pass, be that small or large items of dirt and finally stuck on stubborn bits of dirt. The two rollers allow it to actively agitate the carpet or floor to lift most dirt first time. The two rollers that make up the DuoClean technology also allow for a smooth transition between different surfaces such as carpet and laminate. They do this without the need for altering anything on the vacuum cleaner itself.

Shark DuoClean IF200UK

Another feature that I feel is lacking from a lot of vacuum cleaners is they are either an upright or a handheld vacuum cleaner. A prime example of this is the Gtech Air Ram, don’t get me wrong I love the vacuum cleaner it has some amazing features. But one of the things that really bugs me with the Gtech is it’s upright and that’s it. With the Shark DuoClean IF200UK with a few clicks, it is a handheld vacuum cleaner.

In the box you get the following:

  • 1 x Shark Cordless Vacuum Cleaner with Duo Clean
  • 1x 20cm Crevice Tool
  • 1x Upholstery Tool
  • 1x Dusting Brush
  • 1x Lithium-Ion Power Pack
  • 1x Power Pack Charger
  • 1x Accessory Tote Bag

Shark also offer a version which has an additional battery taking the running time up to 44 minutes along with a charging dock capable of charging both batteries simultaneously. This is around £100 dearer than the base model but in my opinion is a fantastic buy! You can find a link to this version below.

Dyson / Shark / Gtech

Dyson

Dyson started making vacuum cleaners back in 1991, they pioneered the bagless vacuum cleaner and set the standard in the marketplace. Prior to Dyson hitting the market the Hoover name was synonymous with a vacuum cleaner, to change that is no mean fete. Dyson managed to do that with their products due to their fantastic build quality, warranty and innovative features.

Shark

Shark is a brand that appears to be a relative newcomer to the vacuum cleaning arena. How wrong we could be, they have actually been established as a brand for nearly a century. Venturing into vacuum cleaners a good few decades ago. Relatively unknown in the UK they have recently positioned themselves as one of the leading brands in the cordless vacuum cleaning space and with innovation, features and a fantastic warranty gained our best cordless vacuum cleaner title.

Gtech

Gtech, headed by founder Nick Grey are innovators in the cordless household item space. They have a full range of products which you can find in our Gtech review. When it comes to vacuum cleaners their industry-leading technologies such as integrated headlights and adjustable handles set them apart as a pioneer in the space.

Dyson V8 Cordless Vacuum Cleaner Review

Dyson pioneered the bagless vacuum cleaner and they have come a long way since then. What they have kept true to and a feature that everyone now sees as syonomous with a Dyson is the suction! The Dyson V8 doesn’t disappoint, as far as cordless vacuum cleaners go this one breaks the bounderies. Not only is it a powerful vacuum cleaner initially, flip a switch to invoke MAX mode and you are at a whole new level of power. Max mode takes the standard powerful cleaning suction from 22 AW to 115 AW.

One of the other features that I have always loved about a Dyson is the quick release tools. They ensure that the tool is securely attached to the vacuum cleaner, yet at the press of a little red button the tool is released again. The Dyson V8 comes with a whole range of tools detailed below, but my favourite has to be the combination tool. It goes from a soft brush that slides up to turn it into a crevice tool!

    • 2 Year warranty
    • 40 Minute run time
    • 5 Hour charge time
    • MAX mode

So what makes the Dyson V8 so special? Dyson have spent since 1991 perfecting the bagless vacuum cleaner and they really know what they are doing. When they entered the cordless vacuum cleaner space, they took what they knew, and made an amazing cordless vacuum cleaner. The Dyson V8 is their latest offering and it doesn’t disappoint when it comes to features. Some of the features on offer include:

  • 40 minutes run time
  • No touch emptying of collected rubbish
  • Advanced filtration
  • Mini motorised tool
  • Full size to handheld convertable
  • Two power modes – MAX and Powerful
  • Docking station

40 minutes run time is ample to clean most houses several times over. Once an initial deep clean has been performed, which you tend to do when you purchase a new vacuum cleaner and see how much better it is than your last. You don’t then tend to deep clean your house each time you get the vacuum cleaner out. Keeping on top of each room daily or every other day, means that minimum vacuuming is required and the 40 minutes should get you 3-4 cleans in a standard side 3 bedroom house.

Like Gtech, Dyson have gone for a method for emptying the rubbish collected where you don’t have to get involved. You hold the Dyson V8 over your bin, pull a lever and the dirt falls out straight into the bin. You may find that items and some dirt gets stuck inside here. Every few cleans it is worth poking with a toothbrush and cleaning it out properly.

Dyson are known for their filtration technologies, they are great vacuum cleaners to choose if members of your family have allergies or are sensitive to dust. The filters in place capture allergens as you pass the Dyson V8 over the surface you are cleaning and release air back into the room cleaner than the standard air we breathe.

The mini motorised tool is a fantastic idea, I love it when manufactures couple motorised power with the standard carpet cleaning tools of a hand held cleaner. With each pass a motorised brush agitates the carpet, ensuring more dirt is sucked up and removed, leaving a better clean.

Dyson V8 Hand Held

Similar to the Shark DuoClean and unlike the Gtech Air Ram, the Dyson V8 converts fully from a cordless upright vacuum cleaner into a cordless handheld vacuum cleaner. Simple remove the extension bar and affix a smaller tool using the quick release system and you are ready to go. The Dyson V8 comes with a crevice tool, mini soft dusting brush, soft roller cleaning head, motorhead, mini motorised tool and combination tool.

The two power modes available really set the Dyson apart from the competition and allow it to be a more premium product in the category of best cordless vacuum cleaner. Standard suction from any Dyson including the V8 is exceptional and provides a fantastic clean. However, sometimes you need that bit more, ground in dirt or a lot to clear, Dyson don’t give you a bit more they give you a lot more! The MAX boosted option only gives you 7 minutes of runtime but wow is it powerful!

Dyson is known for good looking products, from the stylish fans and great looking vacuum cleaners. The Dyson V8 comes with a dock which not only takes care of charging but also is an integrated storage solution. The dock mounts neatly on to the wall and provides a rather accessory to the home.

In the box you get the following:

  • Dyson V8 Absolute Vacuum Cleaner
  • Charger
  • Quick-release crevice tool
  • Docking station
  • Quick-release mini soft dusting brush
  • Quick-release soft roller cleaner head
  • Quick-release motorhead
  • Quick release combination tool
  • Quick release mini motorised tool

We think that the Dyson V8 is a fantastic choice and whilst it might be on the pricier end of the best cordless vacuum cleaner to buy, we think it is well worth the investment.

Accessories

Dyson offer this great accessory bundle that features a large soft brush which is great for dusting. It provides the suction of the vacuum cleaner so that dust and dirt doesn’t get brushed onto the floor, whilst it’s soft bristles don’t scratch or damage the surface. It also features a flexible crevice tool, this is something we have seen before from the Gtech Multi they offer a car accessory kit which features a flexible crevice tool. This is especially useful for cleaning inside doors or down the sides of seats in a car. It can also be particularly useful in the home too, getting into areas the Dyson V8 cannot.

Do you need the pet version of the cordless vacuum cleaner?

If you consider the power of the suction across the Dyson V8, Gtech Air Ram and Shark DuoClean IF200UK you would be forgiven for wondering why would you need a pet version of the product. The suction is plenty ample to remove pet hairs from your carpets and surfaces, the Shark and Dyson come with motor powered active brushes which actively remove pet hairs out of the box. So what is the big deal?

Dyson and Gtech take two different approaches to the pet situation, one from an allergy point of view and the other from an odour point of view.

Dyson have always had hypoallergenic filters in their vacuum cleaners and they are fantastic, if you or a relative have allergies, asthma or other breathing considerations the filters Dyson use are second to non and are said to really help. They take this a step further with the animal version of the Dyson V8, by absorbing a high percentage of the allergens associated with pets. The air that is recirculated into the home once passing through the Dyson’s filters is better than normal breathing air.

Gtech’s take on the pet version of their product, the Gtech Air Ram K9 is odour control. We all know that no matter how clean you keep your dog, how many air fresheners you make use of in your home, if you have a dog the chances are your home smells of dog. This is typically because your carpet smells of one, not the actual dog itself. The Air Ram K9 comes with some of the odour capsules, additional ones can be purchased which when used in the Air Ram K9 release a pleasant odour into the carpets as you clean them. Much like Febreeze works to neutralise and freshen fabrics.

Gtech Air Ram Cordless Vacuum Cleaner Review

Gtech is a funny company to describe as I would say they have done to the cordless gadget industry what Dyson did to the vacuum cleaning industry back in the early 90s. But thats a funny one seen as how we are talking about the vacuum industry. Their products are designed solely around cordless, battery powered functionality and they do it exceptionally well.

They offer the Air Ram, Multi and Power Floor models. The Air Ram being a cordless upright vacuum cleaner, the multi a handheld cordless vacuum cleaner and the Power Floor a hybrid of the two. The Air Ram which is the focus of this review, whilst lacking as being adaptable into a cordless is an amazing product and below we go into more detail.

    • 2 Year warranty
    • 40 Minute runtime
    • 30 Day money back guarantee

If you have had the experience of a Gtech product in the past you will already know of their great quality, customer service and the fantastic 30 day money back guarantee. But one of the other great things that I love about the company is the considerations they make when designing a product. A key point they take on board with each product is the balance of the product, this helps the users back and many other joints in the body. The Air Ram is no exception, whilst it isn’t the lightest vacuum cleaner on the market, it feels sturdy and well balanced.

The Gtech Air Ram balances the must have features of every other cordless vacuum cleaner on the market with new unique features that make the Air Ram different and stand out above the crowd.

Similar features we have seen already from products such as the Dyson V8 include the removal of dirt and waste from the vacuum cleaner without getting covered in it. Simply hold the dirt receptacle above your bin and slide for hands free dirt removal. They also make clever use of dirt compression technology to store a ridiculous amount of dirt inside the dirt holder. This allows you to clean for longer and not make the size and weight of the overall product suffer as a consequence.

As for the unique features that Gtech utilise to make the Air Ram, Multi and Power Floor unique. The first feature that I am obsessed with and when I was told about I thought was either a joke or a complete waste of time is the headlights. You have to see these in action to really understand and appreciate them, they sound like a useless feature, but once you have used them you will be strapping torches to all of your vacuum cleaners. They work really well to identify dirt on the floor that you wouldn’t see in a room using traditional artificial lighting or natural lighting.

Another feature that I think is brilliant and should be included on every vacuum cleaner is the variable height option. People aren’t a standard height and we live in a gender equal society where everyone can contribute to the household chore of vacuum cleaning, however with a standard vacuum cleaner this can be a challenge. With the Gtech Air Ram the variable height handle allows it to be used by someone who is just over 4 foot or 6 foot something.

Both of these features are ground breaking, innovative or exceptional feats of engineering, they are incredibly simple, but they are missing from other manufacturers and fantastic additions to vacuum cleaners in general.

The Gtech Air Ram as far as cordless vacuum cleaners go is pretty amazing. However, it does cause me concern in one aspect and this is the primary reason it couldn’t make the best cordless vacuum cleaner title. It is strictly an upright vacuum cleaner, it doesn’t come with any tools or attachments, nor does it flex or adapt to become a handheld cleaner. Gtech’s answer was the multi which is a fantastic handheld cleaner but then not really much of an upright cordless vacuum cleaner. They have since brought out the Power Floor which is a more hybrid product, but it’s primary devices and the ones that people are aware of through the advertising campaigns are the Air Ram and Multi. I don’t personally feel you should have to spend on two devices to acomplish such a basic task.

There are positives to the two devices, such as less stress on one device, more run time, more batteries and chargers, etc. But personally I want to store one device, use one device and one device accomplish all of my vacuum cleaning requirements.

Pet friendly cordless vacuum cleaners

If you have pets, Gtech also do a K9 range for each of their models. This is another pretty cool concept, the fundamentals of the product in each case are the same, however they have added a scent dispenser that whilst you are cleaning your carpet releases an odour to combat animal smells around the home and generally keeps the home fresher in general. Another simple but brilliant concept.

Conclusion

In conclusion, we have taken a look at the Shark DuoClean IF200UK, Dyson V8 and the Gtech Air Ram. We have seen some great features, some unique to a manufacturer and some that are widely adopted across the brands. Which ever you decide to go for we are confident you will have one of the best cordless vacuum cleaners on the market today.

Our best pick is the Shark DuoClean IF200UK, which offers brilliant features, a reasonable price tag and an outstanding 5 year warranty! We would happily recommend the Dyson V8 and Gtech Air Ram, as they offer some amazing features and fantastic product quality, but there has to be a winner and in this case the Shark DuoClean IF200UK to us stands out above the rest!
