Voltage
The whole point of purchasing an electrical screwdriver set instead of just a standard one is that you need your tools to be able to protect you should anything happen! You need to know when you are working with electricity that you are going to be safe from a nasty shock, which is what electrical screwdrivers are designed to do.
Different electrical screwdrivers will be made out of different materials and tested up to different voltages, which means that you will be able to safely work with them up to different voltages. It is essential that you check for this before you start work, as the last thing you want is to purchase tools that aren’t going to be up to the task, or find out the hard way that you are under-tooled!
Some are guaranteed up to just 100 volts, which won’t be enough for most jobs around the home. For example, plug sockets alone are working at around 120 volts. Whereas others are guaranteed all the way up to 1000 volts, which is more than enough for any home DIY projects that you might be completing. We even found some models that were tested successfully up to 10,000 volts, but you won’t find a guarantee that stretches this far!
Magetised or Not?
Not all electrical screwdriver sets will be magnetised, but this is one of those little features that really makes a difference as far as we are concerned. A magnetised screwdriver will make it much easier for you to screw in the nail or fastening that you are working with, as it “connects” with the screwdriver. So no more wobbling, dropping, or hurting your fingers whilst you are working!
We also love that it is so much easier to tidy up spares screws and bolts when you are working with a magnetised screwdriver set! As the screwdriver will just collect them all up for you!
Weight
Look at the weight of the set overall, including any carry case that might be included. Almost all screwdrivers are going to be light enough that you will be able to work with them consistently for a period of time without becoming fatigued, but in our opinion the lighter the better. Not just this, but when you put them all together and factor in the case as well, you are going to find they get a little heavier, which isn’t ideal if you are wanting to move between different jobs/locations and have other things to take with you!
We found that weights ranged from as little as 350g, all the way up to 1.5kg, which is quite a big difference, so make sure to check this out before purchasing!
NOTE: The one time that we would be willing to concede on a heavier overall product is for a good quality case – more on this below. You are much better going for a heavier overall weight of closer to 1kg if this means that you are getting a case you can rely on for your electrical screwdriver set!
Handles
The handles of your electrical screwdrivers are going to be the key to having a positive experience when you are working with your tools – as well as not being electricuted of course! Look out for handles with comfort, padded grips that will reduce fatigue whilst you are working. It is also important to check the actual grip of the handle, to make sure that this is not going to wear away and is anti-slip. Any handle that you struggle to get a grip off will make it incredibly difficult for you to actually turn the bolt or fastening that you are working with.
