In A Hurry?

For anyone that has just bought a ride on lawn mower you are probably now wondering how on earth you get to the underneath of your mower! If this sounds familiar, or maybe this is the first time that you are needing to change your blades, then keep reading for all the essential information you need to know so that you can get buying. We have also included some of the best ride on lawn mower lifters on the market to help you decide which is right for you.

Weight Capacity

One of the first things that you need to think about is the weight capacity of your lawn mower lifter. It is vitally important that you never overload your lifter, as doing this could cause the lifter to buckle when under pressure, not only damaging the lifter and the mower but potentially also you!

Remember that your lifter doesn’t need to be able to hold the FULL weight of your ride on lawn mower, as it is only going to be lifting the front off the ground, so it essentially needs to be able to lift around half the weight of your mower, but then allow some extra “wiggle room” for things like fuel, grass cuttings (if your mower has broken fully loaded) and even just to take into consideration you leaning onto the mower whilst repairing/maintaining it. For example, if your mower weighs around 500kg then you need a lift that can raise at least 250kg…but we would always recommend slightly more…so look for a lifter capable of safely lifting around 300kg.

Weight capacities tend to range between 300kg and 400kg depending on the quality and design of the product so make sure to check for this.

Lift Height

The sole purpose of your lifter is to raise your ride on mower off the ground, so it goes without saying that you need to look at the lift height that comes with your lifter! Different lifters use different mechanics to get them off the ground, so the lift height that you find varies quite considerably. The smallest height that we found was around 30cm, up to a massive 1m. Obviously the higher the raise, the more you are going to have to be careful but also this frees up a lot more space for you to move around and complete the necessary work.

Also look out for the variation and adjustability in height that is on offer. Some will be able to vary between around 5cm up to 70cm which gives you much more flexibility when you are working!

Wheel Span

Many ride on lawn mower lifters are going to work by lifting the wheels from the ground to tilt your mower so that you can work underneath it. If this is the type of lifter that you are looking for then you are going to have to make sure that the “feet” are going to be able to carry the span of the wheels on your mower. Most lifters will have adjustable fittings so that you can adapt to the size of the lifter to make sure that the tyres of your ride on mower sit perfectly in the middle of each “foot”. Make sure to check the wheel spans that the tool is compatible with to make sure that it is going to be suitable. These usually range between 30 inches up to 70 inches.

TOP TIP: Look out for the grip and security that is offered from the feet. You need to be sure that your wheels are going to stay put if you are climbing underneath your mower. Some achieve this by the grippy materials that they use, others have sunken sections for the tires to sit in and some models actually allow the tyres to clip into the feet.

Usability

It is important to think about how easy it is actually going to be to use your ride on lawnmower lifter. Look at the mechanisms involved in actually raising the mower. Most scissor lifts are going to be manually controlled, this is as simple as turning a swindle to the desired height or other times there is a type of crank that can be used, so are nice and simple for relatively small ride-on mowers. We also found some of the best ride on lawn mower lifters use hydraulics to reduce the amount of work you have to put into lifting the mower, so will be better suited for anyone that has a heavier mower or maybe suffers from back problems. Obviously all of this depends on the size and weight of ride-on mower that you have and may be an added expense that you just don’t need! However, it is important to make sure that safety comes first and whatever mechanics you go for have safety catches that will hold the lifter (and the mower!) in place when you set the height.

Make sure to also look how easy it is to lower the lifter again once the job is done. We found that on some models this is really quite difficult – this is usually due to keeping the lifter safe and secure (which we understand is important) but personally there are plenty of models that are able to offer both, so these are the ones to look out for!

Once you have covered that most important aspect you can look at the actual weight of the lifter itself and the portability that it has to offer. Look out for models that are lightweight, whilst still being safe and have handles and rollers to make them easier to move around between jobs. Also ensure (for larger models at least) that there is some kind of handle that you can use to transport these bulky tools! Make sure that these offer a rubber, grippy surface as well to reduce fatigue whilst you are working.

Assembly and Storage

Ride on lawn mowers are particularly large garden tools, so it makes sense that the tools used to lift them are going to be on the large side as well! This means that you are going to be best off looking for models that can be folded and packed away as small as possible when they are not in use – saving precious space in your shed or garage. Some of the best ride on lawn mower lifters have simple hook and clip designs that allow them to be easily packed away but just as easily (and safely!) hooked up to the desired height for the job you are completing.

TOP TIP: We found some lifters that had wall mounting hooks as part of the design, meaning that your tool isn’t going to take up floor space in your garage or shed.

The Best Ride On Lawn Mower Lifters

Now that you know the main factors you need to consider before purchasing your lifter, here are some of the extra features that we found on the best models! If your mower, and the time and effort you put into your jobs, is important to you then these are what you need to be looking for!

  • Wheels – Lifters can be quite difficult to move around due to their shape and bulk. For this reason, you are best looking for models that have sturdy, good quality wheels so that your lifter can be simply pushed into place. Make sure that they lock into position well (or are off the ground) once your lifter is flat so that they are not going to affect the stability of the tool.
  • Safety strap – If safety is at the forefront of your mind (which it should be) then look out for safety straps that will take the strain of the ride on mower for long enough to resolve the problem or move to safety should anything go wrong.
  • Floor grips/feet – It is really important to know that your lifter isn’t going to move around whilst you are working, This is important not just for your safety but also to avoid any damage coming to your mower. The best lifters will have additional grippy “feet” that will help the lifter to stay in position on the floor and avoid any slippage!
  • Adjustable tilt angle – Look out for lifters that have adjustable tilt angles as well as adjustable heights – this will allow you even more options in how you work with your ride on mower depending on the job that you are wanting to complete.
  • Power drill compatible – Some very clever models that we found had a “key” space fit for a power drill so that your power drill can do the hard work of turning and lifting the mower off the ground. This will save you even more effort when you are working.
  • Rubber padding – If you are looking to purchase a lifter for your mower then chances are you are wanting to look after your ride on mower and treat it right. If this is the case then make sure to purchase a model with rubber padding around the key areas of the lifter (such as the feet). This is going to prevent your mower from becoming scratched.
  • Foot pedal – Some of our favourite lifters use foot pedals to lift the mower off the ground instead of a spindle for you to turn. We found these are considerably easier to work with, particularly if you have a heavier mower that you are trying to lift.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I measure the wheel span of my mower?

When checking the wheel span of your mower to purchase a lifter you usually need to measure from the exterior edge of one wheel to the exterior edge of the other wheel. However, some lifter manufacturers like to mix things up by taking measurements from the centre of the wheels so it is worth checking for this if you aren’t sure whether your mower will fit!

How do I maintain my lawn mower lifter?

Despite your lifter being purchased to allow you to maintain your mower..it is going to need maintenance itself! Moving parts are going to need lubricating occasionally and any dirt or debris that collects will need removing to avoid any rust or wear beginning to show. You also need to remember that hydraulic lifters are going to need pressure and fluid checking regularly so that you can be sure they are working effectively.

Can a mower lifter lift any ride on mower?

Most ride on mower lifters are going to be compatible with most different types of ride on mower. This means that you should be able to use them with your mower no matter what brand they are etc. However, we would recommend checking this as there are some size considerations that you need to make.
