Features of the Dewalt DCD796N

There are some main features that are worth considering when looking at the Dewalt DCD796N, to help you decide whether it is what you are looking for.

  • Speed – 500-2000rpm
  • 3400 beats per minute
  • Torque – 30-70Nm (Depending on speed setting)
  • Weight – 1.8kg including battery

Why should I buy a Dewalt DCD796N?

The main things that we liked about the Dewalt DCD796N are how lightweight and compact the drill is, especially considering the power that is offered with the drill. It is big enough, and built from strong enough materials, to feel that it will be able to cope with the jobs that you are asking of it, but also lightweight enough to reduce fatigue when working and help you to access those hard to reach places (helped by the fact that it is cordless of course!).

This drill really packs a punch in terms of its power (especially considering the price). We would normally be wary by what appears to be such a good deal, but the added benefit of the product being from a well-known brand that has been tried and tested since 1922, means that you can trust in the tool that you are buying, and in the customer service you will receive should anything go wrong! The Dewalt DCD796N can cope with a wide range of work, so although usually advertised as a more domestic model, it can cope with the wide range of jobs that you may be throwing its way!

Extra Features Worth a Mention

On top of the usual, main things that need to be considered when reviewing a tool, there are some extra features that Dewalt have added to this model that really make it, even more, user-friendly. For example, the tool can be fitted with the bigger battery packs from Dewalt that have longer battery life. This sounds like it should be obvious but there are a number of their tools that don’t – which means you could end up buying multiple battery packs for different tools!

Also, there is a handy light at the base of the drill which illuminates when you pull the trigger and stays lit for around 20 seconds to help when working in darker areas. This, along with the additional torchlight, has adjustable brightness settings too. The torch will stay on for around 20 minutes before switching off to try and maintain battery life, and will even start flashing if the battery is getting low, warning you to switch battery packs – or pause work for a recharge!

Extra features such as the belt hook, magnetic bit holder, keyless chuck, easy to use trigger and torque settings all add to the overall effect of this tool, making it simple and straightforward to work with!

Things We Didn’t Like About The Dewalt DCD796N

Overall, we love the Dewalt DCD796N and think it offers great value for money. However, if we had to be critical there are some small things that may be worth mentioning…

  • It is VERY similar to the DCD795, so if you already have a Dewalt Hammer Drill then it probably isn’t worth investing in the newer model as there is only a small increase in torque and some small changes to the features offered.
  • Sadly, the grip is less comfortable than some other models (if we are being picky!)
  • The speed selector can be a little tight to control, slowing down the work that you are completing, but this does stop accidental switches between the two!
  • Finally, as much as we love the torch feature, it does dramatically reduce the battery life! So you will find yourself having to recharge the battery regularly if you are using this feature often!

Features to Look For

When looking at different packages that are available on the market for the Dewalt DCD796N we found that there are some key features that are worth looking for.

  • Check to see whether the deal that you are looking at is offering the body of the drill only, or whether it offers one (or two!) batteries as well. This will affect the overall initial outlay that you have when buying the drill. Equally, as discussed above, this Dewalt drill is compatible with their individual, large battery packs, so it may be that you don’t need the batteries, in which case the body only will be just what you are looking for!
  • It is also worth looking for newer models that have a 5.0 XR lithium-ion battery, as this is longer lasting and will increase the power that is offered with the tools. Older models come with the standard smaller battery – which will be sufficient if completing small to average-sized jobs around the home, but for anything more, you are going to want the larger battery size!
  • The final thing worth checking for is whether this hammer drill comes with a carry case or not. This is important for storing, and transporting your tool as otherwise it can become damaged and parts could be lost.

Frequently Asked Questions

What warranty comes with the Dewalt DCD796N?
The Dewalt DCD796N comes with a 3-year warranty for the body of the tool. With certain companies this warranty can be extended providing the product is registered online so this is worth watching out for!

What does the ‘N’ stand for after the product number of the DCD796?
If you find a model advertised as the Dewalt DCD796N, then this means that you are purchasing the body only of the drill – i.e. it does not come with battery packs! This is worth checking as unless you have other Dewalt drill battery packs at home that are compatible (as not all are) then you are going to want to purchase the model that does come with battery packs included!
