Makita Range Overview

A bit about Makita

Makita has been producing power tools for more than 80 years, and it just keeps getting better and better at it. It comes as no surprise that it is one of the leading brands in this industry. In this review, we are going to deal with several of their leading products.

Most people associate Makita with drills. They do a fantastic range of combi drills, SDS drills and impact drivers. These range in specification, price and what they deliver. Some are corded and other cordless, some come with batteries and chargers others don’t. Whatever your requirements Makita has something for everyone.

What sets Makita apart from the rest of the competition is their looks, build quality and the fact that they deliver first time every time. We have reviewed some of their best products in each category below.

Makita DHR202Z

The first thing you notice about the Makita DHR202Z is how easily it drills through even the toughest of materials. It drills through concrete like butter. This is due to features like its ergonomic shape and synchronized RPM and BPM functions.

The fact that this drill can perform drilling, hammering and chisel functions makes it extremely versatile. There is just so much you can do with this single hammer drill.

It is obvious that a lot of time and effort and time was put into the design of this Makita SDS drill. I say this because it has some features that are truly awesome. For instance, this hammer mill has a built-in torque limiter which makes it stop any time the bit jams.

It’s also quite impressive that this hammer drill’s chisel can rotate through 360º giving it access to 40 different positions. The only disappointing thing about this hammer drill is that it comes with neither a battery nor a charger.

  • LED light
  • Safety clutch
  • One-touch slide chuck
  • Forward/reverse rotation
  • Carbon brush

Makita drills in general

Makita is known for pioneering cordless power tools and remains a leading brand in this industry. It, therefore, comes as no surprise that their tools are very popular. This is especially true about their high-quality drills.

These drills are powerful, strong and durable. They also have a polished look. They come in different kinds and sizes. In this review, we have dealt with one SDS hammer drill and three models of combi-drill. Although these drills are different, there have some similarities. These similarities include:

  • Cordless
  • Light and compact
  • Ergonomic shape
  • Rubber grip
  • Forward/reverse switch
  • Electric blade
  • Variable speed trigger
  • LED light
  • Keyless chuck

These are standard Makita drill design choices. It’s worth noting that although the DHR202Z is an awesome SDS drill, there is a more current version of this drill, the Makita DHR242Z. In the case of combi-drills, there are several to choose from,

So which is the best combi-drill in this review? Well, that is an entirely personal choice. It is really difficult to compare these drills since each one is designed for a different purpose. While the HP457WE is not as powerful as the rest and is generally unsuitable for heavy duty tasks, it’s suitable for DIY tasks around the house. It is also cheaper

On the other hand, the Makita DHP482 combi-drill can get bigger jobs done but is still not as powerful as the DHP458. It is a general duty tool and is light enough to carry around with you the whole day. It also has a pretty impressive torque of 62Nm.

It comes as no surprise that it’s one of the most popular combi-drills available. Meanwhile, the Makita DHP458 combi-drill is a heavy-duty tool. It is perfect for professional construction work and heavy-duty tasks around the house. Needless to say, this tool is popular among builders, kitchen fitters, and even plumbers

It has a torque of 88Nm, substantially more than that of the Makita DHP458. Generally, these combi-drills are all pretty good. Ultimately, you will have to choose the drill that best serves your purpose.

Makita DHP482

This Makita 18V combi-drill is in the LXT range of drills. It’s therefore compatible with the LXT range of batteries and chargers. One of the most amazing things about this drill is its Extreme Protection Technology which protects it from dust and water.

This kind of protection comes in handy when working under harsh environmental conditions. Considering this and its robust and sturdy nature, it is obvious that the Makita DHP482 was built for heavy-duty use.

Another selling point of this Makita 18V combi-drill is that it comes with a battery fuel gauge. This gauge lets you know how much power you have just by clicking a button. The more the power you have left, the higher the number of indicator lights that come on. There are three indicator lights in total.

Additionally, the Makita DHP482 combi-drill comes with a metal 2-speed gearbox. The high quality of this gearbox improves transmission and overall durability of this drill. All things considered, this is a pretty solid drill.

It will be especially useful to those who constantly undertake heavy duty projects. On top of this, the Makita DHP482 comes with 2 x 5Ah Batteries and a charger.

  • Single keyless chuck
  • Light and compact
  • 21 torque settings
  • Optional side handle

Makita DLX2131JX1

The Makita DLX2131JX1 is an all-purpose drill kit. There is little you can’t do with this kit. It comes with the Makita DHP482Z combi-drill, the DTD152Z impact driver, three batteries and a charger.

All these are neatly packaged in a compact Makita carrying case. Both the combi-drill and impact driver come with intelligent triggers. To increase their speed during the drilling process, you just have to press the trigger harder. This quality is very convenient.

The 3Ah Li-ion batteries in the Makita DLX2131JX1 are known for their fast charging and low discharge rate. On the other hand, the enclosed charger has a cooling fan which eliminates the possibility of overheating.

Ultimately, all the components of the drill kit work together to improve efficiency. However, the Makita DLX2131JXI drill kit also comes with some shortcomings. First of all, the enclosed combi-drill is not as powerful as the other combi-drills in the LXT series.

Also, the enclosed impact driver has no battery indicator, a feature noticeably present in its predecessor.

  • Variable speed trigger
  • Electric brake
  • Ergonomic rubber grip

Makita DFR550Z

This Makita auto-feed screwdriver is truly worth your money. Its dustproof construction is just one of the things we like about this tool. This construction choice was obviously necessary in order to ensure smooth sliding.

Well, it doesn’t disappoint. The screw guide of this Makita screwdriver additionally makes sure your precious screw strips don’t tangle. It is also able to collapse when you need it to. This makes it easier for you to store and travel with your screw strips.

Another thing we like about the Makita DFR550Z screwdriver is that it comes with an adjustable stopper base which allows you to regulate screw lengths ranging from 25 to 55mm. This feature will allow you to choose among seven length settings.

Finally, if you find drill maintenance to be a hassle, this Makita screwdriver was meant for you. Maintenance of the Makita DFR550Z has been made easy by the fact that its carbon brushes are easily accessible from the exterior.

The only disappointing quality I can find in this screwdriver is that it keeps jamming.

  • Anti-tilt device
  • Silent clutch
  • Lock-on button
  • 4-pole motor

Makita DMR104W

The DMR104W is a popular Makita radio which catches both FM and DAB stations. This Makita DAB radio is top of the line. You will probably realize this the first time you see it. Its silver front control panel is simply hard to miss.

The ruggedness and robustness of this Makita radio make it uniquely suited for use at work sites. If your work site is large, you will be glad to find out that this radio is loud enough to reach you no matter where you are on the work site.

Also, if it starts raining, you will have around 5 minutes to get your radio to safety before any damage is done to it. Another redeeming quality of the Makita DMR104W radio is that it comes with an FM antenna which can easily be removed and stored in a storage space available at the back of your radio.

This radio also comes with an LCD screen which makes it easy to operate. However, I find that the most attractive quality of this Makita DAB radio is the fact that it can run on either rechargeable batteries or AC power.

Unfortunately, this Makita DAB radio doesn’t come with Bluetooth connectivity. There is also an issue with the bass. It tends to take over at high volumes.

  • Soft grip handle
  • Digital tuner
  • Aux-in jack
  • Micro USB port
  • Anti-shock loudspeaker
