Ryobi One Plus Battery Range Overview

At ToolsReview.uk we are big fans of the Ryobi One Plus product line and we are delighted of offer up our comparison of the Ryobi One Plus Battery range.

Every tool in the Ryobi One Plus range is designed to work from a single set of batteries. This means that once you have a battery you can simply pick up a new power tool, such as an impact driver or combi drill as a body only unit. Why pay for more batteries than you need? Only buying what you need means lower costs at the tills and more choice over what type of batteries that you buy.

A side benefit of a “one battery fits all” approach is that you only need a single type of charger to keep everything powered up. This reduces a mass of wires and clutter that will inevitably appear when using many different types of batteries and chargers.

We have looked at 4 of the main battery models in the Ryobi One plus battery range and picked Our Best Value, Our No Holds Barred and Best Budget recommendations.

5.0Ah Lithium Battery

Ryobi One+ Battery Range Overview

The RB18L50 ONE+ Lithium+ Battery is that daddy of the entire Ryobi One Plus battery range. The massive 5Ah capacity means that you’ll be able to complete all but the biggest jobs in a single charge.

We think that the 5.0Ah version is ideal for larger applications such as use with the Ryobi Cordless Mower or Cordless Circular Saw or where-ever you need extended running times away from a wall socket.

Conclusion, thoughts and recommendations

The entire Ryobi One Plus range is a bit tricky to offer a full review on, mainly due to each battery being the same except for the battery capacity, size and weight. All the main features are identical, such as the battery cell monitoring, overload and thermal protection circuits and the battery status indicators.

This means we’ve based our recommendations purely on capacity and value for money.

Our tests have taken into account a real world scenario of driving 4 x 65mm screws into pressure treated pine using data supplied by Ryobi. We then used this data, created a baseline using the standard kit battery to create an endurance factor.

  • 1.3Ah “Kit” Battery – 1.0X
  • 1.5Ah Battery – 1.06X
  • 2.5Ah Battery – 1.59X
  • 4.0Ah Battery – 3.1X
  • 5.0Ah Battery – 3.42X

This “endurance factor” gives us a ready reckoner of just how much more capacity the battery has over the kit version, with a higher multiplier indicating a higher capacity and longer run time between charges.

From this data we can create the following conclusions.

The 1.5Ah model offers barely any performance increase over the kit battery, and so is very hard to recommend.

The 5.0Ah unit offers a massive 3.42X performance increase over the kit battery, but has a price and weight to match. However if you must have the best performance – this is the one to get. The 4.0Ah version is a great balance of performance and price and it is readily available, this is in contrast to the 5.0Ah version that can prove hard to find.

The 2.5Ah version is a great budget choice for replacing the kit battery, or as a handy backup to a larger capacity unit.

Note: We deliberately didn’t offer a review of the basic 1.3Ah version available as a “kit” battery with some starter sets. This battery lacks a lot of the advanced features and more importantly the capacity of the standalone batteries. We’d never recommend that you seek out additional 1.3Ah batteries, only upgrade from them and use them as a backup. The 1.3Ah basic battery will work in all of Ryobi’s range, just don’t expect too much of it.

  1. I am looking to replace some of my tools and others in the future when required. Things like drill , impact driver , hedge trimmer, small lawn mower etc
I have had a look at Ego and Husqvarna but they are quite expensive.
The tools are for domestic use but at the same time l would like reliable quality tools likely to last and repairable if necessary. I would also like one battery fits all and of good quality.
My list of requirements may not be possible but if necessary l could divide into garden tools and diy tools
Can you advise on what makes l should look at ?

    • Hi, when it comes to power tools, personally I am a Makita man. Love the brand, the quality and the price isn’t too dear. I personally have the LXT range, but the non-LXT are slightly cheaper. Depending on your budget you could also look at Ryobi, they work out a bit cheaper. I would do as you suggest and split your power and garden tools up when it comes to cordless garden tools the Gtech stuff I have tried for domestic application is fantastic. We have reviewed most of their products, so have a read of the reviews on the site.

  2. Hi Mike,

I am really getting into the Ryobi range, but it’s a bit difficult to get a battery shipped to me on it’s own. I have to arrange some additional shipping to get one delivered to this island.

A bit of an odd request, but could you confirm what size the packaging is in the box for 1 of these batteries. For the 5ah Amazon (UK) is saying the size is “18.4 x 85 x 168 cm” which doesn’t look right for a battery.

    Thanks
    Ken

    • Hi Ken,

I don’t have one to hand at the moment, but that does seem rather a large package just for a battery. I would imagine that’s a lot of excess packaging! I have you tried speaking to Ryobi directly?
