In A Hurry?

Sick of the strain in your arms from carrying around your bottle sprayer? Fed up from having to top up your solution after one length of your garden? Here you will find all the essential features you need to look out for with the best garden sprayer!

Size and Volume

The size of your knapsack sprayer is going to impact you in a number of ways. The first is the amount of solution that you are actually going to be able to carry. Obviously the larger the garden sprayer the more you will be able to carry, which then means that you won’t be having to fill up your sprayer as regularly. However, this is going to make your knapsack sprayer heavier which will increase fatigue and won’t be ideal for anyone that suffers with back pain.

A bulkier knapsack sprayer is also going to make it more difficult for you to move around when working and fit into smaller spaces in your garden. Consider the amount of solution that you are going to need and purchase a garden sprayer size that is slightly bigger to allow you a little extra space but not so much that you are carrying around extra bulk for no reason!

We found that most knapsack sprayers ranged between around 10L up to around 18L, which is going to massively affect the amount of time that you can spray before you are having to refill.

Pump and Power

One of the most important differences in garden sprayers is the way in which the pump is powered. Your cheapest option is going to be a hand pump, which is where all the energy and force comes from you. This means that they are cheap to run and purchase, but they can become quite tiring to use quite quickly. You will also have to pause periodically to re-pressurise the tank using the hand pump again, which increases the amount of time and fatigue that you are going to be dealing with whilst working.

Your next option is going to be a battery powered knapsack sprayer. Admittedly these are going to be more expensive, but they will vastly reduce the time and the energy that you have to put into spraying. Simply charge up the battery and then this will control the motor and the pump of your sprayer whilst all you have to do is control the nozzle and walk around your garden! You will also find that, thanks to being battery powered, the pressure and speed at which they can spray will be even greater. Just make sure to check whether the garden sprayer comes with a lithium-ion battery as these will be longer lasting and offer between 3 and 6 hours of spray time between charges!

TOP TIP: To work out how much power you are going to be working with, check the pressure that comes with your knapsack sprayer. Some are relatively low at around 50psi but others are able to offer more than 90psi!

Nozzle and Wand

The wand is the part of the garden sprayer that you are going to hold and the nozzle is the end that the solution sprays out of. You need this to be light, compact and easy to use whilst you are working – so those are by far the essential features to look out for. However, many manufacturers have changed up their nozzles and wands to help their sprayers stand out from the rest.

Some have a telescopic wand which can be shrunk back down to size when you are working in a small, localised area (or when you are packing away at the end of the day) but then they can be extended for when you are covering a much larger area to reduce the amount that you are going to have to wander around the garden! Some telescopic wands extend up to nearly a metre – massively increasing the range that you will be able to work with!

We particularly like knapsack sprayers that come with adjustable nozzles – these will allow you to adjust the spray from your wand in various different ways depending on the job that you are working on. This is fantastic as you can use the straight sprays for when you are targeting individual weeds or spots, but then swap to the fan spray for when you are covering larger areas with fertiliser.

The last part of the wand that you need to check is the trigger on the knapsack sprayer. This needs to be well positioned, easy to use but also easy to lock into place when you are not using the sprayer so that it does not leak excessively into one place.

TOP TIP: It is always worth looking at the length of the hose that is connected to the wand. This doesn’t need to be TOO long as you are never going to be working miles away from the tank if it is positioned on your back, but we do like models with some length as it makes it easier to maneuver when you are working. Look out for models that are around 150cm in length.

The Best Knapsack Sprayers Have…

For anyone that is wanting to get the best value for money from their garden sprayer, these are the features that we found in the best sprayers. These features will help you to get the job done quicker, easier and more effectively so that you can get back to enjoying your garden!

  • Adjustable straps – If you are wanting to increase your comfort when you are working then look out for models with adjustable straps. This will help you to position the pack in the centre of your back so that it won’t bang on your back or sit too low down when you are working.
  • Comfort straps – The straps of your garden sprayer are what will be holding the container to your back so it makes sense that they need to be comfortable. Look out for models that have included additional padding but also breathable material. More than half the time that you will be using your sprayer will be through the summer months, so the more breathable the material, the less you are going to sweat whilst you are working!
  • Adjustable pressure – Some of the best knapsack sprayers will come with the option to adjust between two or three different pressure levels when you are working. This really allows you to increase the flexibility that you have when working as there will be times when you need a large amount of solution sprayed over your garden (When using fertiliser for example) and also times when you need less (such as weed killer).
  • Diaphragm or piston sprayer – These are the two main types of pressure pumps that you will find used. A piston model is normally going to be able to offer more pressure but a diaphragm style pump will be able to withstand working with harsher chemicals.
  • Materials – It goes without saying that if you are wanting your knapsack sprayer to last then you are going to need to make sure to choose heavy duty materials. But what actually are these? We would recommend strengthened heavy duty plastic for the tank and metal fittings that will be able to withstand the increased pressure. UV protected materials are also going to be longer lasting as they won’t be damaged by the sunlight when you are working!
  • Weight – You need to consider the overall weight of your knapsack sprayer as it is only going to get heavier once it is full of solution. As a general rule you will find that motorized, electric pumps are going to be heavier as you have the additional parts of the machine and the battery to consider! We found most ranged from around 4.5kg up to around 7kg.
  • Ease of use – You are going to have to adjust and adapt your garden sprayer so that it can work for YOU. This is going to have to take into consideration the job that you are completing, the amount of pressure and spray that you need and also the speed that you walk so that areas are not under/over covered. Make sure that it is easy and quick to adjust these settings so that you can get on with the job at hand!
  • Empty tank warning light – Running your knapsack sprayer when it is empty is one of the worst things that you can do as this will burn out the motor and the pump VERY quickly! This means that we love the sprayers that come with a low solution warning light as you can switch off and refill before it even gets to that point!
  • Pressure release valve – This is a much more standard feature that it used to be, but we definitely wouldn’t recommend purchasing a sprayer without it! This will release any excess pressure from your sprayer so that you cannot damage the system by over pumping!
  • Wand holder – Some of the best knapsack sprayers will come with a small and simple holder for the wand. This is a tiny, seemingly unimportant feature that will actually make a massive difference when you are working as you will be able to hook the wand away whilst you move around the garden and prepare areas for spraying.
  • Reinforced hose – The hose of your sprayer is going to have to be the most flexible point, but this also makes it the weakest. Look out for models offering a reinforced hose as these will be able to withstand the additional pressure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I get a warranty with my knapsack sprayer?

Yes! All good quality knapsack sprayers will come with a warranty of around 2 to 3 years. This will usually cover all the parts of the knapsack sprayer providing it has been used following the manufacturers guidance. If your garden sprayer comes with a filter then this is usually considered a “usable” part so won’t be covered on the warranty.

How do I clean my garden sprayer?

This is one of the most important ways to keep your knapsack sprayer going strong for years to come! The best way to do this is to empty the remaining solution from your sprayer and then fill with water. If you then pump the water through the sprayer this will clear out any remaining solution. You then simply need to dry out your sprayer as best as possible so that parts aren’t left to corrode longer than necessary!

Do I need to replace the filter on my garden sprayer?

Yes – we would always recommend replacing the filter on your garden sprayer periodically. This filter will be there to collect any dirt or debris that collects in your sprayer tank by mistake whilst you are working. If this becomes TOO clogged up the motor in your sprayer will be put under additional pressure. Some models will come with additional filters to reduce the cost of having to replace them.

How can I use my knapsack sprayer safely?

Using your knapsack sprayer safely is essential. It is really important to ensure skin is covered when using your sprayer and make sure to wash afterwards to ensure that you have no chemicals left on your skin. We would also recommend avoiding using your knapsack sprayer in the wind or the rain so that the chemicals are not spread to places that you don’t want them to such as bedding areas.
