The best thing about a torque wrench is that you can set the torque that you need and just work to that point, so that you know you are always going to have the perfect tightness with your nuts and bolts. As this is so important (and basically the reason why you would buy a torque wrench) it is important to consider the torque range that is offered with the wrench. A range that is too small will limit the amount of jobs that you can use your torque wrench for, meaning that you might end up having to pay out for more than one!
A wider torque range will allow you to work on anything from car mechanics to then something as small as a bike or garden tools. These are the best torque wrenches as it means that they will essentially be able to replace any other wrench that you might have used and get the job done!
The torque range of torque wrenches is measured in foot pounds and you tend to find that they will cover one end of the spectrum or the other, with some covering from as little as 10ft – lb and others going all the way up to around 300ft -lb. However, there are some amazing models on the market that cover more or less the best of both worlds with torque ranges from around 20 to 250 ft – lbs!
If you are really wanting the best of the rest in terms of torque range and measurements then there are some models that measure in NMIP (Newton Measure Inch Pounds). TOP TIP: Look out for wrenches that have features making it easy to set the torque setting that you require! This can be achieved with simple buttons on the handles that allow you to adjust the torque to your required strength. Also look for good visibility that makes it easy to see exactly what torque setting you are opting for, as we found that with some cheaper models this was quite difficult which became frustrating when using regularly.
Construction Material
The construction material of your torque wrench is going to be important, it is going to increase the impact and torque that it is going to be able to work to, as well as improving its durability in different working environments. The best torque wrenches have a solid, all steel construction, which will be able to handle anything that you throw at it and still keep going. You also know that this material is going to be resistant to rust and corrosion, so unless you really neglect it, it is going to stand the test of time.
You will often find many low to mid range models do have some plastic involved, which isn’t going to be the strongest material to opt for especially as you are relying on the tool to be powerful and able to withstand some torque and pressure! We would definitely recommend keeping the plastic to a minimum where possible if you are wanting a tool that is going to last!
Size
The size of your torque wrench is important because you want one that is going to be small enough to allow you to access those hard to reach places but also large enough that it is going to be sturdy and strong enough to work with tougher bolts and nuts without breaking. Not only this, but a longer torque wrench is going to make it easier to access those deeper areas that you might be working on, so if you know that your torque wrench is there to help you when working on engines then you might need to be going for a longer model!
We found torque wrenches that ranged from around 7 inches up to just over 10 inches so you need to consider what is going to be right for you. The weight of your torque wrench is important because if you are going to be working with it for any period of time then a wrench that is too heavy is going to increase fatigue. Do I have to calibrate my torque wrench?
