Best Torque Wrenches Buyers Guide

Torque wrenches are essential for anyone that is going to be working with nuts and bolts but particularly for those of you that enjoy working on your cars at home! A torque wrench is going to ensure that EVERY nut and bolt is securely to exactly the right amount – not so loose that they start coming undone at the wrong time, but also not so tight that they become threaded and damaged! Yes, in theory you can do this with a normal wrench, but it can be so hard to know exactly how tight you should be going so why not opt for a torque wrench that can take that pressure out of your hands!

The only problem is the number of torque wrenches that are available on the market! There are so many it can be difficult to know which actually is the best torque wrench on the market – that is where we come in! We have selected some of the best torque wrenches on the market at the moment AND given you the full details on what you need to be looking for – and why!

Only Got 5 Minutes?

If you are sick of your nuts and bolts coming loose then keep reading for all that key information to get you up to date – and quick! We have included our favourite torque wrench at the moment and some of those key features that are vital for making a good torque wrench purchase.

Torque Wrench Features

Construction material, size and weight are all things that you need to consider when purchasing a torque wrench, so we have gone into a little detail on all of these and more to help you when you are buying!

Torque Range

The best thing about a torque wrench is that you can set the torque that you need and just work to that point, so that you know you are always going to have the perfect tightness with your nuts and bolts. As this is so important (and basically the reason why you would buy a torque wrench) it is important to consider the torque range that is offered with the wrench. A range that is too small will limit the amount of jobs that you can use your torque wrench for, meaning that you might end up having to pay out for more than one!

A wider torque range will allow you to work on anything from car mechanics to then something as small as a bike or garden tools. These are the best torque wrenches as it means that they will essentially be able to replace any other wrench that you might have used and get the job done!

The torque range of torque wrenches is measured in foot pounds and you tend to find that they will cover one end of the spectrum or the other, with some covering from as little as 10ft – lb and others going all the way up to around 300ft -lb. However, there are some amazing models on the market that cover more or less the best of both worlds with torque ranges from around 20 to 250 ft – lbs!

If you are really wanting the best of the rest in terms of torque range and measurements then there are some models that measure in NMIP (Newton Measure Inch Pounds). These tools allow for incredible amounts of accuracy, with the option of setting the torque at increments of 0.4nm – so no rounding up or down opting for a less than perfect fit! These tools will be perfect for more fragile or older bolts that you are working with as you can more or less guarantee that you will not be damaging them by going too tight, however they are rarer and often a little more expensive!

TOP TIP: Look out for wrenches that have features making it easy to set the torque setting that you require! This can be achieved with simple buttons on the handles that allow you to adjust the torque to your required strength. Also look for good visibility that makes it easy to see exactly what torque setting you are opting for, as we found that with some cheaper models this was quite difficult which became frustrating when using regularly.

Construction Material

The construction material of your torque wrench is going to be important, it is going to increase the impact and torque that it is going to be able to work to, as well as improving its durability in different working environments. The best torque wrenches have a solid, all steel construction, which will be able to handle anything that you throw at it and still keep going. You also know that this material is going to be resistant to rust and corrosion, so unless you really neglect it, it is going to stand the test of time.

You will often find many low to mid range models do have some plastic involved, which isn’t going to be the strongest material to opt for especially as you are relying on the tool to be powerful and able to withstand some torque and pressure! We would definitely recommend keeping the plastic to a minimum where possible if you are wanting a tool that is going to last!

Size

The size of your torque wrench is important because you want one that is going to be small enough to allow you to access those hard to reach places but also large enough that it is going to be sturdy and strong enough to work with tougher bolts and nuts without breaking. Not only this, but a longer torque wrench is going to make it easier to access those deeper areas that you might be working on, so if you know that your torque wrench is there to help you when working on engines then you might need to be going for a longer model!

We found torque wrenches that ranged from around 7 inches up to just over 10 inches so you need to consider what is going to be right for you. It is also worth considering how used to working with this type of tool you are. If you are new to completing jobs like this then we would recommend opting for a shorter length so that you can get used to the tool!

Weight

The weight of your torque wrench is important because if you are going to be working with it for any period of time then a wrench that is too heavy is going to increase fatigue. Not only this, but a heavier wrench will be more difficult to use in tighter spaces, particularly if you are trying to work with one hand! We found weights from as little as 1lb all the way up to 5lb. Admittedly there did tend to be a pattern between the better quality, more heavy-duty wrenches being heavier, but there were some lightweight top quality models on the market that are worth opting for.

The Best Torque Wrench Features

Now you know the main features that you need to consider before purchasing a torque wrench, here are some of those extra features that we found in the best torque wrenches on the market. If you are really wanting the best for your money or know that you are going to be using your torque wrench regularly (or both!) then these are the features that you need to be opting for!

  • Reversible head – a torque wrench with a reversible head is going to offer you much more flexibility when you are working as you will be able to work in hard to reach places and also tighten either way. That makes it much easier to access different areas of the job that you are completing so it is particularly popular for anyone wanting to work on their cars or other power machinery such as lawnmowers.
  • Click system – The idea of a torque wrench is that it tells you when you have reached the torque setting that you needed for the particular nut or bolt that  you were working with. The best way of doing this that we found is the “click system” where the torque wrench will click once it has finished tightening the fastening that you are working with. A nice, audible click is the best as this will be clear and easy to hear even if you are working with your head in the bonnet of a car!
  • Certification – If you want the best of the rest then look out for torque wrenches that have been certified and tested against a standard. We found some tools that were accurate to within 3% of the torque measurement that you require. This means that you can be sure of a professional, strong, safe finish no matter what you are working on. This is particularly important if you are working on cars or larger machinery as you need to know that those bolts are going to hold correctly!
  • Ratchet style head – A hardened ratchet style head is going to last longer and therefore give you much better value for money with your tool! Many will be made out of hardened steel alloy which is going to be incredibly durable!
  • Locking system – You are going to need a locking system that is easy and quick to use, particularly if you are using your torque wrench regularly. We prefer the spring-loading locking systems as these are super simple to work so that you can quickly lock the tool into place and get the job done! Some also have “one twist” unlocking mechanisms, which allows you to release the tool quickly and easily, saving you time when working on multiple bolts!
  • Digital reader – If you are looking for ease and accuracy then opt for a torque wrench with a digital reader as this is going to make it super easy to tell exactly what torque you are working to and make adjustments as necessary. Digital models also tend to work differently than the traditional “click” using a loud buzz or beep so are great for if you are struggling to hear that traditional click whilst you are working!
  • Comfort grip – Think about the usability of your tool as well – especially if you know that you are going to be using it for any extended period of time! We would recommend opting for a rubber comfort grip that will allow you to hold onto your tool but also reduce fatigue whilst you are working.

Pro Bike Tool 1/4 Inch Drive Click Torque Wrench Set – 2 to 20 Nm – Bicycle Maintenance Kit for Road & Mountain Bikes - Includes Allen & Torx Sockets, Extension Bar & Storage Box (Silver)
  • Precision Torque Measurement - Install components with calibrated precision - 2.0 to 20.0 Newton Meter torque range with micro adjustment to 0.1. Helps ensure that the fittings on your bike are tightened to the correct torque, and that clamping forces are distributed evenly across clamping surfaces. This helps prolong the life of high-performance components and prevents damage from over tightening. Ideal for use on stems, seat clamps, lever clamps, chain sets, rotors and headsets.
  • Peace Of Mind Protect Your Investment – Over-tightening bolts can cause expensive damage to your bike. Applying too little torque can lead to bolts working loose or not doing their job. Our 1/4-inch drive dual-direction torque wrench driver removes the guesswork, making it easy to follow the manufacturer’s recommended settings. Each hand tool is shipped pre-calibration tested for accuracy, +/- 4% (clockwise) and +/- 6% (counter clockwise).
  • Safe & Easy To Use & Read – Smooth and precise operation. Spring loaded adjustment collar automatically ‘locks’ in place at the desired torque setting, ensuring it will not accidentally slip when being used. High-contrast Nm scale is easy to read. Wrench emits a ‘click’ that can be ‘heard and felt’ when the pre-set torque value is reached, alerting you to ‘stop’ applying force. Important: At low Nm settings under 5 Nm the click can be ‘subtle’. Between 5 & 20 Nm the click will be stronger.
  • Right Tools For The Job – Includes Hex: H2, H2.5, H3, H4, H5, H6, H8, H10. Torx: T10, T25, T30 socket set and 100mm extension bar for reaching concealed bolts. Bespoke protective molded case to keep the torque wrench and tool bits stored safely, also includes ‘storage’ section inside case to store bolts when using the wrench. Reversible 72-tooth ratchet head measures torque in clockwise and counter clockwise directions. Engage and release bit instalment button.
  • Professional Quality – Each hand tool is fully calibration tested for accuracy to ISO 6789-2:2017 and DIN EN ISO 6789-1:2017-07 requirements and test methods for design conformance testing, quality conformance testing and recalibration procedure. Includes individual certificate of calibration with each set. We are so confident about our high-quality wrenches that if you have any product issues, we’re very happy to either provide a Refund or a Replacement on your purchase!

Frequently Asked Questions

What warranty comes with a torque wrench?
For some reason the warranties on torque wrenches are a lot less consistent than the actual tools themselves! Warranties for torque wrenches tend to range from as little as a year all the way up to a lifetime warranty (providing the tool has been maintained and calibrated as necessary). Obviously opting for a tool with a lifetime warranty is going to give you much better value for money as you know that you have a manufacturer to rely on should anything go wrong!

Do I have to calibrate my torque wrench?
Yes! It is really important to factor in calibrating your torque wrench as if it becomes out of line even slightly then this is going to affect the effectiveness of the tool – which is the whole reason that you bought it in the first place! It is suggested that you should calibrate your wrench roughly after around 3000 repetitions, or if you aren’t using it very regularly then twice a year should be sufficient.

What is the best type of torque wrench?
If you are wanting accuracy and flexibility in the jobs that you are completing then we would probably say a digital torque wrench is the best to go for. This will show you the amount of pressure being exerted right in the moment, so it will allow you to adjust the torque frequently which is better for more fragile bolts that you may be working with.
