Now that you have decided on the type of steam cleaner you are looking for, here are some of the generic features that you need to consider.
Weight and Size
The weight and size of your steam cleaner is largely going to depend on the style that you go for, but this is going to be really important to determine how easy it is for you to use your steam cleaner. Obviously if you have one that you are pushing or wheeling along the floor then the model can get away with being heavier, but even then you are probably going to have to lift it to fill the tank and to put it away when you are storing it. Models start relatively light at around 500g but go up to around 4kg depending on the type.
If you are wanting a model that can be used to clean kitchen surfaces and even windows then make sure it is light enough to hold for extended periods of time. We would recommend around 500g-1kg.
Tank Size
The water tank is vitally important as without this you are not going to be able to produce the steam to do the cleaning! A large water tank is going to be great for cleaning large surfaces such as floors, because you won’t find yourself having to refill it every few minutes. However, the larger the tank, the heavier your steam cleaner is going to be, which is going to make it more difficult to move around between rooms whilst you are cleaning!
To help you gauge what size tank is going to be right for you…we found that a one litre tank will last for about 30 minutes (max) whereas a 2 litre tank will work for between 1 and 2 hours, obviously depending on the model. So consider where you need to clean and how long this would normally take!
Attachments

All models are going to go to at least 100℃ as this is necessary to produce steam, but some will go up to 200℃.
The temperature and pressure of your steam cleaner is going to be determined by the power that it comes with. This is also going to impact the speed at which it can heat up, and how consistently it can work for. For smaller models you can probably get away with a wattage between around 400W and 1500W (although there are models with more and less than this). Whereas if you are wanting one of the larger cylinder “vacuum style” steam cleaners then you are going to need upwards of around 1200W.
TOP TIP: The best steam cleaners that work at a higher pressure and temperature will be able to provide you with a dryer clean, saving you having damp furnishings or floors for ages after you have cleaned them!
